Collaborate with the online delivery portal site on Moodle to reduce the burden of emergency nursing seminars
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face seminars were cancelled and Moodle was introduced. This allowed us to continue offering a wide range of educational courses and seminars.
Furthermore, by migrating user information managed on the portal site to Moodle, we were able to significantly reduce the workload for registration processing.

- Can you tell us about the activities of the Japanese Emergency Nursing Association?
Mr. Masuyama: Every year, our association holds an academic conference. This year marks our 25th anniversary. We also publish books and hold seminars on emergency nursing. We have about 4,000 members, most of whom are nurses. Many university professors are also members.
- What is Mr. Masuyama's role within the Japanese Emergency Nursing Association?
Mr. Masuyama: I am in charge of seminars within the association. Therefore, I am also responsible for Moodle in relation to the seminars.
- What was the background for deciding to implement e-learning this time?
Mr. Masuyama: Our association offers a large number of educational courses and seminars within the nursing society. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were forced to cancel face-to-face seminars and had to switch to e-learning, which allows learning anytime and anywhere.
- What was the reason for choosing Moodle as an e-learning system?
Mr. Masuyama: The professors at the academic conference were using Moodle to conduct classes during the pandemic, and I myself was familiar with using Moodle. Additionally, one of the reasons for choosing Moodle was because it is open-source and allows for various customizations. When we decided to introduce an LMS, we researched several options and ultimately chose Moodle for these reasons.

- How do you feel about using Moodle with its many features?
Mr. Masuyama: I think it's great that Moodle has features such as quizzes, videos, and bulletin boards that can be used as content. I think it's sufficient for creating various e-learning materials. Personally, I have no issues with usability as I follow the policy of using only necessary functions, similar to using a mobile phone. Although there are inquiries from seminar organizers about whether certain things can be done, I believe the current features are sufficient for handling them.
- How effective is the integration of the academic society's portal site and Moodle?
Mr. Masuyama: The portal site manages user information (member information) and application information. We have integrated the portal site with Moodle to migrate user information and application information from the portal site to Moodle. This eliminates the need to manually load user information and application information into Moodle, greatly reducing the workload of administrative tasks. In addition, we have also migrated Moodle's learning history to the portal site. This allows us to track the completion status of e-learning courses for learners on the portal site. The vendor on the portal side and Human Science on the Moodle side developed these integrations. This collaboration has been a great help.
- What were the points that led you to choose Human Science Co., Ltd.?
Mr. Masuyama: Recently, there has been a rapid increase in companies handling Moodle. We gathered information from performance surveys and teachers, and compared several companies at the board of directors. In the end, we evaluated Human Science Co., Ltd. and decided on them because there were no issues with the price.
- What kind of effects have you seen from implementing Moodle?
Mr. Masuyama: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past three years, face-to-face classes have been cancelled. At first, many students were not used to online learning and the number of participants did not increase much, but recently there has been an upward trend. I see this as one of the benefits of online learning.
In addition, e-learning has the advantage of being able to be done at one's own pace, but it is still a challenge to continue and complete it because it is also possible to quit. However, at first, only about 60% of people who took e-learning completed it, but now it has increased to about 80%, so I think this increase is a truly wonderful effect. In the situation where face-to-face learning has been suspended, the fact that e-learning has been able to provide educational opportunities as an alternative on a continuous basis is greatly appreciated and appreciated by the academic community.
We conducted a survey for members for another purpose. In the questions regarding how much our seminars and e-learning, including those provided by our association, contribute to nursing practice, there were also results showing that e-learning has a higher contribution rate. In our current learning, we offer the improvement of assessment skills based on CBL (Case Based Learning) cases. We have discussed with the seminar committee and believe that it has an effect that can be applied in practice as a learning effect. In addition, the fact that it can be viewed multiple times was also well received. These are the effects of e-learning that are not found in face-to-face learning, and we feel that it was a good survey result.
How is Human Science's response?
Mr. Masuyama: Currently, even if a problem occurs and we consult by email, we receive a quick response, so we do not feel stressed. We hope to continue to receive support for consultations in the future.
- If you have any future plans or plans, please let us know.
Mr. Masuyama: At the conference, we plan to create several new courses, and we believe that blended learning will be the basis. We plan to continue face-to-face meetings in the future. We are discussing whether to make it a pre-learning or post-learning. In the future, we would like to further enhance e-learning. Last year, the committee responsible for various seminars split into subcommittees and met once a month for a year to learn how to use Moodle. As a result, two courses were added. It seems that it may take a little more time for e-learning to become widespread.
Also, in the future, we are considering issuing licenses to people who have completed learning courses to a certain level. We want to clarify the skills necessary for emergency nursing practice and provide the necessary courses to our members.
