Customer Requests
At the Open University of Japan, the submission of assignments from approximately 85,000 distance learning students was managed through two methods: postal mail and a web system using Moodle.
Issue 1
85,000 participants, approximately 250 courses. It is not realistic for administrators to manually set up all 250 courses.
This requires a tremendous amount of time and increases the likelihood of human error. You were considering measures to improve efficiency and prevent setting omissions.
Issue 2
System downtime is never acceptable due to the paid service. It was necessary to verify the current system configuration in preparation for the increase in the number of users.
Issue 3
Moodle frequently has minor version updates.
Initially, it was planned to be handled by the person in charge of operations, but due to other tasks, they were unable to allocate time and could not implement it.
Key Points of the Proposal
Point01.
Proposed and developed a feature to batch configure various items on Moodle. Achieved business efficiency through automation and prevention of configuration omissions.
Point02.
Conducted load testing of the current system and performed parameter tuning based on the results.
Achieved a reduction in response time through parameter tuning.
Further conducted load testing to identify the causes of system bottlenecks and proposed optimal hardware specifications.
Point03.
On behalf of the person in charge, we have conducted updates for the middleware and Moodle in both the testing environment and the production environment.
Customer Feedback from Clients
We were able to develop various Moodle tools, such as bulk registration for courses, which streamlined our operational tasks.
By tuning the servers we had been using, we achieved optimal performance, resulting in faster processing speeds.
Regarding the Moodle version upgrade, we greatly appreciated your assistance in consulting about the relationship with the OS and middleware updates of the servers used at the academy. You also made significant efforts in local adjustments at the academy.
From Human Science representatives
As needed, you were able to set up meetings with the person in charge or the hardware maintenance personnel, allowing the development to proceed smoothly.
I believe it was good that we were able to conduct hearings regarding the purpose of use for the development features and also make proposals that require less development effort.
Additionally, there were situations where we could not respond immediately due to the geographical conditions with the Open University of Japan, but by utilizing web conferences, we were able to resolve misunderstandings that could not be conveyed through words alone, which was extremely helpful.
