Growing demand for cloud services in e-learning systems (Moodle, Totara Learn)
After the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for e-learning systems (and the learning management systems [LMS] that support them) has increased significantly. Recently, due to the stable operation of cloud services and improvements in security, there has been a growing trend to outsource system infrastructure for cost reduction, regardless of whether it is new or a migration.
This time, we will introduce the background of cloud migration and the cloud package for the e-learning system "e-CoreLea".

What is driving the adoption of cloud-based e-learning systems?
In recent times, as the IT transformation of internal operations continues to advance and cloud technology has become widely adopted, we often receive inquiries about wanting to migrate LMS that has been operated on-premises (in-house) to the cloud, or implement new systems on the cloud. A common reason companies want to utilize the cloud is, of course, the reduction of running costs after implementation. While on-premises environments offer high confidentiality, they also come with the challenge of needing to cover the costs of server purchases, maintenance, and associated personnel expenses internally, which inevitably leads to inflated costs.
Such challenges are faced whether implementing a new system or already having an existing one. I believe many organizations, regardless of being corporate or educational (such as universities), encounter these issues, so it is worth considering outsourcing the system infrastructure to the cloud to resolve them.
At Human Science, we have supported companies and educational institutions facing such challenges by providing assistance with cloud migration and launching new services. This time, we would like to introduce one of those services, "e-CoreLea".
What is the cloud-based e-learning system "e-CoreLea"?
In line with the recent shift to cloud environments, our company has been offering a cloud-based LMS service called "e-CoreLea" since May 2016.
"e-CoreLea" is a SaaS-based LMS cloud service that allows for online learning, where customers can choose between two open-source LMS options (moodle, Totara Learn) according to their usage patterns. This service includes server operation and maintenance (version upgrades, backups, maintenance). Additionally, based on our past implementation experience, we also provide support services for using and utilizing the LMS during operation.

About the open-source LMS provided by "e-CoreLea"
(Moodle, Totara Learn)
"e-CoreLea" offers two LMS: Moodle and Totara Learn. Moodle is a world-famous LMS widely used primarily in the education sector. In contrast, Totara Learn is an e-learning system mainly for businesses.
Therefore, Totara Learn not only utilizes the learning features of Moodle but also includes functionalities necessary for corporate human resource development, such as organizational information management, training features, and team management.
Both have a wealth of features, making them LMS that can meet various customer needs.
Additionally, both Moodle and Totara Learn are widely used around the world as open-source platforms, making frequent bug fixes and vulnerability responses possible, which is one of their appealing features for secure usage.
If you are considering building a new e-learning system in the cloud.
If you are already operating an LMS in-house but are struggling with the operational costs and are contemplating a migration to the cloud.

Origin of the bonus 'e-CoreLea'
Naming products and services is an important element as it conveys information to our customers. Therefore, I would like to introduce how the service name was decided.
The basic considerations for our company when contemplating the service name are:
・It should be clear that it is a service for e-Learning
・It should become a foundational and core service for customers engaging in e-Learning
These are the two points!
Here, I coined the term Core Learning, which plays on the concept of a second foundational system. The combination of Core Learning and e-Learning resulted in the birth of "e-CoreLea"! Looking back, it's quite simple, isn't it?
